What’s the difference between a massage and somatic unwinding?

One of the most common questions I get is ‘what’s the difference between a traditional massage and somatic unwinding?‘. The main difference between massage and somatic unwinding lies in their approach and focus:

1. Focus & intention:

  • Massage primarily works on releasing muscle tension, improving circulation, and encouraging relaxation through manual manipulation of soft tissues. It’s more about the physical aspects—immediate relief for tight muscles and overall relaxation.

  • Somatic unwinding, on the other hand, goes beyond the physical. It’s about reconnecting the body to its natural state by addressing not only physical tension but also the emotional and energetic blockages we carry. The process helps release stored stress, trauma, and emotions, leading to profound transformation.

2. Techniques:

  • Massage involves techniques like kneading, pressing, and stroking to loosen muscles and improve blood flow.

  • Somatic unwinding uses subtler, gentler movements as well as energy, to open up and realign the body. It works through the fascia, muscles, and meridian points & the specific techniques I use are: fascial unwinding, Polynesian footwork, organ massage (Chi Nei Tsang), acupressure & hands-on energy healing.

3. Mental and Emotional Release:

  • Massage is fantastic for relaxation and stress relief, but it doesn’t usually address deeper emotional or mental patterns.

  • Somatic unwinding is designed specifically to release stored emotions, trauma, and tension—whether that’s showing up as anxiety, limiting beliefs, or chronic pain. It’s a holistic approach that transforms mental and behavioral patterns along with physical release, offering deep healing at multiple levels.

4. Healing touch & presence:

  • Massage relies on physical touch to relieve muscle tension and encourage relaxation. While the therapist’s touch is important, the main focus is on physical techniques and applying pressure to the muscles.

  • In somatic unwinding, touch is more intentional and mindful. The practitioner works with presence, often using a lighter touch to engage the body’s self-healing abilities. The practitioner’s attunement to the client’s physical and energetic needs is key, creating a space where emotional and energetic release can happen alongside physical relief. Touch becomes a way to guide the body into a relaxed, receptive state where deeper healing unfolds. Somatic unwinding isn’t just about muscle manipulation—it’s about creating a safe, calm space where both body and mind can truly unwind.

5. Parasympathetic Activation:

  • While both massage and somatic unwinding activate the parasympathetic nervous system, somatic unwinding takes a more intentional approach. It engages the body’s natural self-healing processes by calming the nervous system and balancing the physical and energetic bodies for a more integrated, lasting healing experience.

In summary, while massage focuses on physical relaxation, somatic unwinding is a deeper, more holistic practice that addresses both the body and the emotional/mental aspects of stored tension for long-term change. I offer somatic unwinding in Helsinki & you can learn more about it here.

Lots of love,
